The 1390 Borregas Central Utility Plant project in Sunnyvale, CA established the district energy infrastructure needed to support future Google campus developments. Working alongside Lendlease and Google, Preston Pipelines installed large-diameter hydronic piping connecting the new central utility plant to adjacent development sites, enabling efficient campus-wide heating and cooling distribution.
The project included approximately 800 linear feet of trench excavation, with widths reaching 17 feet and depths exceeding 12 feet in certain locations. Due to the highly congested underground environment, Preston performed more than 90 potholes prior to excavation and successfully completed work around 90-plus utility crossings without a utility strike or near miss.
Preston installed 36-inch HDPE chilled water piping and 24-inch HDPE hot water supply and return lines, complete with pre-insulated butterfly valves and associated appurtenances. The scope also included the design and construction of a bore and jack crossing beneath Borregas Avenue, placing HDPE piping approximately 20 feet below grade.
In addition to construction services, Preston supported project engineering efforts for anchor blocks, expansion joints, and seismic connections. Completed ahead of schedule in June 2023, the project established critical infrastructure for Google’s future campus expansion while setting a new benchmark for district energy delivery in Sunnyvale.
