Preston’s summer interns embarked on a morning of learning, seeing up close the breadth of work that Preston delivers as they visited our various job sites. Project Executive Ian McCoog and Project Engineer Cameron McGinnis led the Intern Field Day tours through projects across the South Bay Area in California at Oracle, LinkedIn, and Microsoft’s campuses. They shared in-depth insights on the methods, techniques, safety measures, and fine details involved in the construction process. The interns had the opportunity to test and apply the knowledge they’ve gained thus far as well as receive new lessons on the following:

• Excavation logistics
• Cathodic Protection
• Reading survey stakes
• Gravity vs. pressurized systems
• Backflow preventers, water meters, FDCs and PIVs
• Potholing for existing utilities
• Hardscape removal
• Sloping and shoring
• Fire water material types
• Gravity piping material types
• Dewatering/ground water management

From utility trenches to parking lot bioswales, our interns saw firsthand how the concepts they learn in the office directly translate in the field. Opportunities like these are invaluable for their early career development. They get to build a deeper understanding of construction, ask questions, and test their current knowledge.
