In celebration of Women in Construction Week, we’re highlighting some of our powerful Preston women to gain some insight into how they began their careers in the construction industry and what they’ve learned along the way.
Let us introduce you to Fleet System Engineer Breanna Marcelo. Breanna graduated from California State University, East Bay in 2021 and joined Preston in 2022 as a Project Engineer before joining the Fleet team.
What inspired you to pursue a career in construction?
Diversity is what inspired me to pursue a career in construction, there are multiple opportunities that you can pursue in the construction industry, and there is always something new happening.
What makes you continue to work in the industry?
The challenges that come up, and the rewarding feeling of accomplishing and figuring out how to overcome those challenges. This industry makes you think, and it’s not your ordinary “desk” job.
What is your favorite part about your job?
The people you work with and the connections you build with other vendors is my favorite part of my job. I enjoy seeing how other companies help and play a role in our business.
What advice would you give to a woman who is considering a career in the construction industry?
Some days in construction can be overwhelming, so I would say to find a person in your company or someone outside of work that you know and trust to be your mentor so that on those hard days at work, you have someone to go to and talk about your challenges or even about life.
What does the 2023 International Women’s Day campaign theme #EmbraceEquity mean to you?
To me, the theme #EmbraceEquity means that we should always be embracing equity, creating a fair and equal workplace everywhere.
