The UC Davis Hospital Bed Replacement Tower project required the relocation of critical chilled water (CHW), hot water (HHW), and electrical infrastructure to support construction of a new hospital tower while maintaining uninterrupted operations across the active UC Davis Health campus in Sacramento, CA.

Working in a highly congested underground environment, Preston Pipelines collaborated with McCarthy Building Companies through a Design-Assist delivery approach to investigate existing conditions, develop utility relocation strategies, and design a robust shoring system to protect mission-critical hospital infrastructure throughout construction.

Preston Pipelines installed approximately 2,200 linear feet of new HHW and CHW hydronic piping using pre-insulated welded steel pipe manufactured by Thermacor, with diameters ranging from 6 to 24 inches. The project also included utility relocations and coordination with existing campus systems to support future expansion while maintaining continuous hospital operations.

A phased construction approach allowed utility work to progress in coordination with the hospital expansion while preserving access, service continuity, and patient care activities throughout the active medical campus.

By successfully relocating mission-critical utilities in a highly constrained environment, Preston Pipelines helped establish the infrastructure necessary for UC Davis Health’s continued growth and future patient care needs.
